  17.     This file is new for ImageStudio-1.2.0 and will be updated with 
  18. every new release. It will contain any new information that is 
  19. relevant to the new release, as well as any new ideas and future 
  20. plans. The format is quite flexible, and is intended just to be an 
  21. interesting read - we hope you like it.

  68. Upgrade Policy
  69. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  71.     When we initially released ImageStudio, we had a "flexible" 
  72. upgrade policy, i.e. we'd see what the reaction was and judge our 
  73. response accordingly. Happily, the reaction has been very positive and 
  74. we have had a very healthy response. Due to the number of people 
  75. registering, it has become obvious that we cannot continue to give 
  76. upgrades using the current method; i.e. you send us a disk and return 
  77. packaging, and we'll send you the latest version.
  78.  
  79.     We have therefore decided on the following upgrade method, which 
  80. should be quicker, cheaper and more convenient for everyone:
  81.  
  82.     o We will upgrade all existing users from earlier versions to 
  83. v1.2.x for free using the existing upgrade method:
  84.  
  85.         - Overseas users can simply send us 2 disks and we will 
  86. send you v1.2.x. We will re-use your packaging and pay for the 
  87. postage.
  88.  
  89.         - Users in the United Kingdom should send us 2 disks and 
  90. suitable postage (2 first class stamps are adequate). We will re-use 
  91. your packaging.
  92.  
  93.     "Ahh!" scream the users in the UK, "But that means we're paying 
  94. more for our upgrade than overseas users". This is not entirely true, 
  95. as the overseas users paid 20US dollars for ImageStudio, which at 
  96. today's exchange rate is slightly over 10UK pounds. It all works out 
  97. fairly equal in the end.

  100.     o From v2.0.0, the version to follow v1.2.x barring any major 
  101. re-thinks, all users will be able to upgrade their registered version 
  102. of the program from the unregistered freely-distributable version. 
  103. This will work as follows:
  104.  
  105.         i)   The registered user obtains a copy of the new version 
  106. of the unregistered ImageStudio from their local PD library, bulletin 
  107. board or InterNet site.
  108.  
  109.         ii)  This unregistered version will be limited to images of 
  110. upto 250x250 as before.
  111.  
  112.         iii) Upon running the unregistered version, the user selects 
  113. the new "Upgrade..." menu item, and selects their registered copy of 
  114. ImageStudio in the file requester given.
  115.  
  116.         iv)  The program confirms that this is indeed a legal 
  117. registered version and patches the new unregistered version with the 
  118. user's details.
  119.  
  120.         v)   When the user now runs the new patched version, it will 
  121. be fully operational.
  122.  
  123.     We think that this method should work well for everyone - you, 
  124. the user, don't have to keep sending us disks for upgrades and we can 
  125. concentrate our time on improving the program instead of dealing with 
  126. upgrades. If you have any comments on the above method, they can be 
  127. sent to our address, given at the bottom of this file.

  129. Future Plans
  130. ~~~~~~~~~~~~

  132.     Usually developers are warey of announcing their future plans, 
  133. but we think it's important for you to have a general idea of where 
  134. the program is heading; we hope to give some ideas here.
  135.  
  136.     As the program has progressed to the current version, we have 
  137. been listening to the users requests and comments on the operation of 
  138. the program. As it is the user who ultimately buys the program, it 
  139. makes sense for us to listen to all the suggestions we receive. The 
  140. main aim of v1.x.x of the program was to build a solid core from which 
  141. to expand, we think that with v1.2.x we have now done that. It is now 
  142. time to expand.

  144.     It has become obvious that the most requested feature from the 
  145. users is ARexx support. This will boost the power of the program 
  146. enormously, allowing for batch processing (e.g. turn all the GIF 
  147. images in a drawer into IFF-ILBM images, or, turning all 24bit 
  148. rendered raytracer files into HAM8) as well as the automation of 
  149. commonly performed tasks (e.g. scale an image down to 80x40, remap to 
  150. the Workbench palette and copy to the clipboard ready for making into 
  151. an icon with IconEdit). The ability for packages supporting ARexx to 
  152. communicate with each other also raises interesting possibilities 
  153. (e.g. altering the colour balance of an image from within your desktop 
  154. publisher, or, using ImageStudio in conjunction with the new 
  155. DeluxePaint5). The possibilities are endless.
  156.  
  157.     Adding ARexx to ImageStudio is not a trivial task, and is likely 
  158. to take some time. We can't guess how long it's likely to take - that 
  159. all depends on other pressures of work, and such like. Please don't 
  160. keep asking us "When's the next version out?" - expect it when you see 
  161. it. Comments and suggestions are still very welcome of course, see 
  162. below for our addresses.

  164. Clarification of How to Send the Registration Fee
  165. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  167.     We have tried to clarify the proceedure for sending the 
  168. registration fee to us. We can accept a wide range of payment methods,
  169. only a few cause problems.
  170.  
  171.     We accept:
  172.  
  173.         o    10UK pounds cash.
  174.         o    A 10UK pounds cheque, drawn on a UK bank.
  175.         o    A 10UK pounds postal order, purchased in the UK.
  176.         o    20US dollars cash.
  177.         o    Eurocheque.
  178.         o    International money order.
  179.  
  180. We *don't* accept any foreign cheques drawn on non-UK banks and we *don't*
  181. accept foreign postal orders.
  182.  
  183. Note: Make sure that when sending cash, it is well wrapped in the 
  184. envelope.
